Tesla’s Model 3 does not have a traditional key and it will utilize your smart phone for this purpose. The model 3 will now enter ‘Six months of manufacturing hell’, well that is what Elon Musk calls it. Tesla is increasing its production to meet pre – orders. This itself calls for a production of above five hundred thousand cars. Those who purchase this car will be using their phones to unlock it. The phone will communicate with the car using Bluetooth. The car will detect the smart – phone of the owner and will automatically initiate the procedure to unlock. Almost all smart phones made in the last three years come along with Bluetooth.

What if the smart – phone battery runs out?

Reading this you will most certainly have the question – “What if the smart – phone battery runs out?”. Well Tesla has considered this scenario too. It provides the user a backup in the form of a NFC card. NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It communicates without internet and the action of enabling is decided on the basis of proximity. This technology is fast and easy. This technology does not have prerequisites such as pairing codes or link ups. It is much more power – efficient than most other wireless technologies since it uses chips, the main advantage of which is that they run on very low power.

This card is capable of storing a wallet, it is that thin. On pressing this card against the B – pillar of the car one can unlock it. This card will then be placed between the seats so that the car can be started. There is a special slot made for holding this card too. This was designed keeping a valet in mind.
