Chennai: As hybrid cars get slapped with tax burden, luxury brands are now lining up electric car plans for Indian roads. The global electric launch of Volvo cars, which is due in 2019, being held in India as well.
A mix of full electrics, plug-in hybrids and BS6 power trains are being betted upon by Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. These were the options that are from their global electric range that they found best for India.
A huge hurdle in their attempt of marketing full electrics is the missing infrastructure for charging in India.
Volvo aims to have a million electrified cars being used on the road by 2025. The launch of Volvo’s first all electric will be in 2019, whose Indian launch is expected around 2020.
Plug-in hybrids are also being launched meanwhile.They see plug-in hybrids as a bridge between future electrics and the current offering.
Mercedes-Benz , the arch rival, has similar plans for India. EQ is the brand under which all pure battery powered cars from Mercedes-Benz will be included under.
BMW with the launch of its i8 has similar plans and so does Audi. Another car in the lineup is that from Mahindra & Mahindra.
