This year’s award in the automotive and transport category of America’s International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) was presented to Kumho’s airless tyre. The South Korean manufacturer won this award for second time in a row.
The innovation that won the award was a BON Tyre, short for “Birth On Nature”. The specialty of this there is that it does not need to be inflated, i.e. it does not rely on air to retain itself.
The BON design was inspired from natural bone structure. It’s design is much like that of a honeycomb or leaf cells.
Despite not being filled with air, the tyre achieves it’s necessary stability and efficiency from it’s voronoi architecture (a mesh like design) . The tyre also has a good amount of economic efficiency.
Senior managing director of Kumho’s R&D headquarters, Jeong Taek-Gyun said: “It is very rewarding that Kumho’s latest example of futuristic design and technology has been recognised by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDEA), and means Kumho becomes the first passenger tyre manufacturer to win all three of the world’s top design accolades – Germany’s Red Dot and iF Design and America’s IDEA awards – two years in a row.”
